First, legal consumption of cannabis in the State of Rhode Island is permitted anywhere you're allowed to smoke a cigarette, however, not while driving. Or, at least that's what a female Providence Police Officer told me while she was towing a car out of a lot. At the time, there was no Cannabis Control Commission in the state as it hadn't been formed yet. Due to this, I was wondering where I was permitted to smoke pot. My friends and I had wondered where you could smoke pot. We debated the laws between Rhode Island and Massachusetts for several hours a few times, and the thought was that you could smoke anywhere in Rhode Island, where as Massachusetts State Law said it's only permissible in your home. One night, I'm at this dive bar and there are two cops towing a car out of the lot across the street. I decide, hey.... I'm gonna settle the rumors I've been hearing and go ask the cop if what I heard was true. I walked up to the two officers and asked "So, is it true that you can smoke marijuana anywhere it's legal to smoke a cigarette?" and she says "Yes, to my knowledge." I walked away delighted but disheartened. Because it's not legal to smoke Cigarettes in my home, therefore, it's illegal to smoke marijuana in my home. While I understand the legal concerns around both smoking in an apartment complex and not smoking in my apartment complex, it's led me to the conclusion that if someone starts to harass me due to the fact that I'm smoking a preroll in public, I literally have the law on my side for now. Obviously you can't smoke pot in a school zone, public park, beach, state forest, or within twenty five feet of the entrance of a building, but you can enjoy any one of the finest prerolls in the state while walking around this summer enjoying the sunlight in anyone one of Rhode Islands famous little small towns.
